Part 3 of 3: The Softchoice team is wrapping up our time at the VMware Partner Exchange (PEX) 2015, and we’ve captured VMware’s vSOM 6.0 announcements.
In this series, we cover the top three announcements around VMware’s power plays: SDDC, data center virtualization, hybrid cloud and a unified platform for all applications.

VMware firmly believes that the future of the data center is software defined. Where all compute, network and storage resources are virtualized. Where each component is automated using software for a unified platform for private cloud, public cloud and hybrid cloud. Where vSOM serves as the foundation for the SDDC.
So, what’s new in vSOM 6.0?
1. You can virtualize scale up and scale out applications
You will be able to virtualize scale up applications like SQL Server, Oracle, Exchange, SAP, and scale out applications like Big Data, PaaS and even SAP HANA. These applications require scale, so VMware doubled the number of hosts per cluster to 64 and each cluster now handles up to 6000 VMs. A single VM can now leverage up to 4TB of vRAM, compared to 1TB before.
2. Enhanced Intelligent Operations
Smart alerts now combine multiple symptoms to generate a single alert focused on a root cause. This means fewer alerts with deeper actionable insights. Also, any view can be converted into a report. Multiple views can be combined into a dashboard, and that view can be added to a report or to a dashboard.
3. Enhanced Policy Based Automation
When it comes to policy management, you will have custom policies applied for specific workload types, applications or clusters. For example, vSOM clients will be able to check against vSphere hardening guidelines.
Making the most of vSOM means you are more informed and these recent changes should enable you to run your data center more efficiently.
If you already have vSOM, leverage the capacity management tool to identify trends win server/storage utilization, so you can better understand the timeframe on your next storage purchase. Also, utilize the ‘What If’ scenario tools to model out capacity changes against the client environment. Then, you are able to build a data-based business case based on exactly how much storage is required to support future business needs.
