Part 1 of 3: The Softchoice team is wrapping up our time at the VMware Partner Exchange (PEX) 2015, and we’ve captured our VMware’s vCloud Suite 6.0 announcements.
In this series, we cover the top three announcements around VMware’s power plays: SDDC, data center virtualization, hybrid cloud and a unified platform for all applications.
Quickly jump to the other two posts in this series:
The 3 things you need to know about vCloud Suite 6.0
vCloud Suite streamlines and automates the delivery of data center operations, applications and infrastructure delivery automation. In vCloud Suite 6.0, VMware offers:
1. Virtualization for traditional and next generation applications
This means virtualization is now available for scale out apps like Hadoop/big data and scale-up apps like SAP HANA. VMware also announced superior graphics and performance for virtual desktops (NVIDIA vGPU). That last one is a plus for global gaming companies.
Increased scale and configuration maximums for VMs hosts and clusters improve application performance and satisfy the resource demands for these applications. For example, you are able to deliver a vSphere based private cloud with lower TCO and also a foundation for complete data center virtualization with hybrid cloud extensibility.
2. Uptime for both traditional and next generation workloads
VMware calls this ‘availability redefined,’ and they’re right. Uptime for both traditional and next generation workloads will be maintained through new availability features that minimize planned and unplanned downtime for mission critical applications.
IT will be able to provide business continuity to protect data and apps and abide by compliance rules and regulations. If an outage occurs, recovery is simple with automated predefined plans to achieve high availability locally when VMs or hardware crash and resiliency if an outage o disaster strikes.
3. vSphere Based Private Cloud
The vSphere-Based Private Cloud is an easier to control and manage virtualized private infrastructure that is extensible to open source cloud environments and to cloud services. The service costing, usage metering and service pricing of virtualized private cloud infrastructure will help IT and line of business owners analyze resource consumption and make important cost benefit decisions on IT investments. In short, the storing, sharing and deploying of VMs and infrastructure from a central repository (and new ways to migrate VMs between hosts) will greatly simplify data center management.
It is now possible to extend a vSphere –based private cloud to an open source infrastructure with VMware integrated OpenStack. Developers can access OpenStack API’s and connect to VMware’s best of breed components including vSphere and NSX for deploying managing and running OpenStack infrastructure and VMware tools and technologies.
IT will also be able to extend private vSphere infrastructure to the hybrid cloud with public cloud capacity and services such as vCloud Air Disaster Recovery-as-a-Service. With additional vRealize suite licenses, IT will use a common cloud management platform across private and public clouds and deliver services and applications in minutes.
vCloud suite now includes vRealize business for vSphere environments so IT can automate service costing and usage metering ofa virtualized private cloud infrastructure. Lastly, NSX for vSphere is available for special add on price to vCloud suite.
